Overview

Sushi Tei, located at Plaza Gurney in George Town, Penang, offers a comprehensive menu that celebrates classic and contemporary Japanese cuisine. The restaurant's emphasis on freshness and variety caters well to fans of both sushi and hot dishes. Its setting, nestled in a bustling shopping hub, makes it accessible for casual diners and aficionados alike seeking authentic Japanese flavors.

The menu highlights a broad range of offerings—from sashimi and temaki rolls to hearty bowls and traditional comfort dishes like kake udon and chicken katsu curry rice. Notably, the Salmon Ikura Oyako Don and Salmon Nabe served with steamed rice stand out as well-balanced dishes combining rich flavors with quality ingredients. For those preferring a lighter option, the Avocado Salmon Skin Salad or Edamame provide refreshing starters.

Customers appreciate the freshness of the sushi, particularly the Aburi Sushi Moriawase that showcases a medley of salmon, eel, and tuna with a delicate flame-seared touch. However, some patrons have noted inconsistencies in sushi rice texture, suggesting room for refinement in execution. Likewise, the chawanmushi, a staple steamed egg custard, is generally praised for its ingredient richness but occasionally criticized for its texture.

Diners find great satisfaction in the karaage chicken—crisply fried and tender inside—and the nabeyaki udon, which, while slightly sweeter than traditional Japanese preparations, arrives in generous portions. These dishes exemplify the restaurant’s balance between authenticity and local palate preferences.

Service experience varies according to reviews. Some customers report attentive and accommodating staff, especially with special requests such as fully cooked eggs in udon. Others mention delays and the need for reminders, highlighting an area for service improvement. The online ordering system, while convenient, can be hindered by connectivity issues, which impacts ordering ease during busy times.

Ambiance-wise, Sushi Tei offers a comfortable and inviting space suitable for family dinners or casual meals with friends. The restaurant’s location within Plaza Gurney positions it as a convenient stop for leisurely dining amid shopping and entertainment activities.

In summary, Sushi Tei blends a rich variety of Japanese dishes with a friendly environment. It appeals to those who appreciate traditional flavors with a modern twist. While there is scope for enhancement in food consistency and service flow, the restaurant remains a recommended spot for Japanese cuisine enthusiasts visiting Penang.

Decided to give this place another go after they shift and renovated new place. Here’s what I tried for dinner : 1. Nabeyaki Udon ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Upon my special request to make the egg fully cooked, they gave me hard boiled one The soup dashi were great but slightly on the sweet base side not as authentic as I had in Japan. Quite big portion however the pot used to cook with it looks so shabby with its coating went off perhaps it’s more healthier and safer if they use claypot instead? 2. Kaarage Chicken ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Deep fried to super crisp and well marinated! The meat is not dry at all and still retain its juices. 3. Tobiko & Tamago Sushi ⭐⭐⭐ - Classics although the sushi rice a bit wet. 4. Chawanmushi ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Nice dashi and lots of ingredients given.

Sushi Tei Review – Gurney Plaza During my recent visit to Sushi Tei at Gurney Plaza, I found the experience to be a mixed bag. The ambiance was inviting, and the menu offered a wide variety of Japanese dishes, but the overall execution left room for improvement. Starting with the sushi, I was disappointed with its texture. The rice felt too wet and lacked the firm consistency expected from well-crafted sushi. This affected the overall enjoyment, as the structure fell apart too easily. However, the seaweed salad was a pleasant surprise – fresh, light, and well-seasoned. The salmon rice was one of the highlights of the meal. It was flavorful and well-balanced, with the fish nicely complemented by the rice. Similarly, the fried shrimp stood out with its crispy texture and savory taste, making it one of the better dishes served that day. Unfortunately, the chawanmushi did not meet expectations. It was overly watery and bland, missing the silky smoothness and delicate flavors typically associated with this Japanese steamed egg custard. The biggest letdown was the service – I had to remind two different waiters before my steamed rice finally arrived, and it came much too late into the meal. Such delays disrupt the dining flow and reflect poorly on staff attentiveness. The Japanese tea was decent, though not particularly memorable in taste or aroma. Overall, Sushi Tei has potential, but it needs to improve both the food consistency and service efficiency to truly stand out in Gurney Plaza’s competitive dining scene.

It is always been my favorite japanese restaurant. The sushi was good especially dragon roll, I always ordered it. The ordering was a little bit difficult, since it is online self-ordering, the internet was not that good and it was very slow to load.
